Ecotourism Activities
Gorgona has a complete package of ecotourism activities, which is why it has become one of the country’s favorite destinations. In your adventure on the island you can do the following activities:
El Penal Trail connects the settlement with the ruins of the old prison (100 meters, low difficulty): Playa Palmeras trail goes from the settlement to Palmeras Beach with a rugged topography which includes bridges and wooden stairways (about 5km, medium difficulty): Yundigua Trail located in the northeastern side of the island goes to Yundigua Beach (3km, low difficulty).
Colombia is the country with the most bird species in the world, which is why it is a touristic destination for amateur and professional bird watchers. Among the species that can be seen in Gorgona NNP, the frigate birds and the pelicans are the most outstanding.
It is the perfect place to observe fauna and flora due to the biodiversity of ecosystems on the island. In neighboring ocean water, 381 species of sea fish, 11 species of whales and dolphins, and 4 of marine lions have been identified. In addition to this, the Colombian Pacific Ocean each year receives the humpback whales and we haven’t yet mentioned the land animals that can be observed.
It has a museum called Casa Payan, which has an exhibition of objects and photographs related to the old prison.
The sites regulated for this activity are Yundigua and the old pier. It has 11 snorkeling points including soft, rocky and reef floors that guarantee the sighting of diverse species.
The scenic beauty of Gorgona NNP make it an ideal place for this activity, although, if the photos or video are intended for commercial use or publication, a permit must be obtained from Parques Nacionales Naturales.
The exuberant nature of the protected area and its state of conservation make it an ideal place for scientific research. Additionally, as in all the parks with ecotourism, education institutions carry out environmental education activities in the park, as do the park rangers who speak to the visitors about the Park, its conservation objectives and ecotourism services and activities.
Diving can be done in the following points: El Viudo, Los Farallones, La Montañota 1, La Montañita 2, Playa del Cocal, Playa la Mancora, Palma Sola, La Parguera, La Tiburonera, Plaza de Toros, El Remanso, Acuario, Playa Pizarro, El Planchón, Arrecife la Azufrada, Punta Brava, Arrecife Playa Blanca and Piedra Redonda. You must have a first and second level diving certification unless you are there to obtain it.
