Among the mammal species you can find red howler monkey (Alouata seniculus), cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), red brocket deer (Mazama americana), collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu), central American agouti (Dasyprocta punctata), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), kinkajou (Potos flavus) and it is a transitory habitat for jaguar (Panthera onca). Among birds there is scarlet macaw (Ara macao), crested guan (Penélope purpurascens), blue-billed curassow (Crax alberti), red-throated caracara (Ibycter americanus) and keel-billed toucan (Ramphastus sulfuratus). The Sanctuary is also a strategic point for migratory birds from the north and south of the continent and a genetic bank for research on national biodiversity.
