The Park’s altitudinal range from 600 to 5,330 MASL accounts for the following ecosystems: lowland tropical rainforest and savannas; forests where palms, Weinmannia and some oak predominate; Andean elfin forest and subpáramo. The super-páramo extends between 4,000 to 4,200 MASL where frost is common. The snow line extends approximately from 4,500 to 5,330 MASL. The protected area has close to 170,000 hectares (1,700 km2) above 3,000 MASL, a little over half of the Park’s extension, which has the complex páramo ecosystem.
