Considering the importance of establishing environmental conservation zones in the Colombian Orinoco region, Parques Nacionales Naturales participated in a meeting that the Roundtable on Wetlands of Casanare conducted with the objective of declaring new regional areas on strategic ecosystems (such as the morichal) in the municipalities of Paz de Ariporo and Hato Corozal.

Corporinoquia, Parques Nacionales Naturales, the government of Casanare, the municipality of Paz de Ariporo and the Incoder participated as an inter-institutional work group in the meeting of the Roundtable.

Similarly, PNN attended the Asociación Calidris and Fundación Canaguaro’s launching of the first 7 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas – IBA: 6 in Casanare and 1 in Vichada most of which are located in civil society nature reserves and affiliated with Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia; this constitutes a significant advancement in conservation for the Colombian Orinoco region considering that these areas are an important contribution to the region as complementary conservation strategies.

BirdLife International and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have sponsored this designation process with the support of the Instituto Alexander von Humboldt, Fundación Palmarito and Corporinoquia.

Likewise, PNN, Corporinoquia, Instituto Alexander Von Humboldt, Unitrópico, the Casanare Government, Fundación Omacha, Fundación Palmarito and Red de Reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil – Resnatur (Civil Society Nature Reserve Network), all participated in the event.

This type of activity strengthens the Sistema Regional de Áreas Protegidas de la Orinoquia – SIRAPO (Orinoquia Regional System of Protected Areas).
