The most outstanding characteristic of the Park is its evergreen cloud elfin forest, which is very similar in appearance to the Andean forests near the páramo line (at heights superior to 2,700 MASL) but here located at merely 550 MASL. The forest, highly humid and exuberant in vegetation, is located only five kilometers from a semi-desert area. Due to its peculiar position within a semi-desert zone, the Serranía de Macuira has been called a “biogeographical island” that is isolated from similar ecosystems and forests.
