The area has 52 fish families (140 species) and 17 families of reptiles with 35 species, among which boa constrictors, alligators, iguanas, lizards, rattlesnakes and sea turtles stand out. Mammal diversity is represented in 14 families and 33 species. Among these you can find: mountain cats, ferrets, manatees, monkeys, otter, ocelot and foxes. But birds are the best known group since it is one of the most important sites in the Caribbean for feeding and resting of migratory birds; 199 bird species have been registered here, two of which are endemic to the Colombian Caribbean region and that are a threatened species at a global level: the hummingbird (Lepidopyga lilliae) and the golofio.
