The Park contains the largest water reserve for the departments of Tolima, Risaralda, Caldas and Quindío, supplying water to 38 municipalities and benefiting more than 3 million inhabitants in the coffee-growing region. Additionally, the protected area serves the purpose of regulating water for the agricultural industries of the Magdalena and Cauca river valleys, two of the most productive ones in the entire country. It is one of the main protected areas and part of local processes of environmental protection of the territory, where a regional system of protected areas is being consolidated for the coffee-growing region.
