The local communities belonging to the municipalities of Villa de Leyva, Chíquiza and Arcabuco consist of peasant farmers, descendants of the Muisca culture, who benefit from the environmental goods and services that the Sanctuary provides. They live off traditional agricultural activities and livestock farming. Cundinamarca and Boyacá must be understood as a large region where different local groups and communities merge, all of them share a common thought structure inherited from the Muisca culture.
