The NNP is home to some 300 species of birds such as the guácharo or oilbird (Steatornis caripensis), Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana) and torrent ducks (Merganetta armata colombiana); more tan 60 species of mammals among which are the Andean or spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque), northern pudú (Pudu mephistophiles) and five species of primates. There are also about 50 species of butterflies (among them the famous Anna’s eighty-eight). There are also some endemic and endangered species such as the black tinamou (Tinamus osgoodi hershkovitzi), which is the biggest in its genus in Colombia; the Colombian weasel (Mustela felipei) and a species of frog (Gastrotheca andaquiensis).
